Areas of Development
Your child will be learning through play. Young children’s learning takes place everywhere and throughout all activities. The Nursery curriculum emphasises the development of personal and social skills, communication and language and physical development, as well as early literacy and numeracy skills. It also contributes to children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in other areas. Children’s progress will be at different rates and individual achievement will vary. However, all children will be following a curriculum, which enables them to make maximum progress towards the early learning goals. These are the goals for children to complete by the time they leave the Reception class. All pupils are continually assessed by written observation and photographic evidence in all areas of the curriculum using the development matters document and the ‘Evidence Me’ programme stored on a tablet. These observations are shared with you on a regular basis via email. Please speak to a member of staff if you would like to know more about this. We have a special theme each week, which is chosen by the children and covers the seven areas of learning. The topic for the week is displayed in the nursery and sent home via Parent Share. Children are welcome to bring in things from home that reflect this. In preparation for your child starting school, they will spend some of their nursery day in our Cygnets classroom. Here the children will have the opportunity to experience slightly more formal phonics and maths sessions, similar to those within our reception class. The amount of time the children spend in the Cygnets class will be gradually increased over the year to ensure a smooth transition from nursery to reception.
