Helping Your Child At Home
How can I help my child at home?
It is important to talk about the Nursery – the activities which will be available and the people they will meet.
Try to spend as much time as you can, talking and listening to your child as you share in everyday activities, washing up, shopping, housework, cooking, washing the car, etc.
Encourage discussion and questioning; show that you value their contributions. Children love nursery rhymes – you can have a great deal of enjoyment repeating them together.
Count and sort objects in as many ways as possible, e.g. counting the stairs, sorting the washing, laying the table, counting money. Name colours in everyday situations.
Read and tell stories to your child. They will learn to enjoy books from your example. Talk about the pictures and encourage your child to retell the story.
Encourage your child to gain confidence in using scissors, pencils, crayons and paintbrushes.
Using the toilet and blowing their own nose should be activities your child is encouraged to manage independently.
In everything that you and your child do together, show your pleasure at even the smallest success. We hope to make the transition from home to school as easy as possible for both you and your child.
We are always keen to see how our nursery children take their learning home, if there is anything you would like to show us you can email us at
