Music
What is the vision for Music at The Phoenix Primary School and Nursery?
Intent
Our vision at the Phoenix Primary School and Nursery, is for our music curriculum to provide all children with a high-quality music education. This should engage and inspire them to develop a life-long love of music, increase their self-confidence, creativity, and imagination, and provide opportunities for self-expression and a sense of personal achievement.
We aim to offer opportunities for children to develop their talents in all aspects of music including composition, performance and appreciation of music.
Music has a unique way of inspiring and motivating students and is an outlet for individual expression. It reflects the culture and society we live in or come from, and explores different cultures and societies around the world. Music allows children to have opportunities to compose simple pieces that convey their feelings, emotions and reactions to the world around them. This might include personal contexts such as relationships at home and in school as well as their reactions to wider issues such as climate change.
Music can play an important role in helping students feel part of a community and provide opportunities for all to create, play, perform and enjoy.
- To develop a love of music appreciation.
- To ensure children are confident in their musical abilities.
- To develop a set of attitudes that will promote self-expression, self-belief and a sense of personal achievement.
Finally, Music is seen as a discipline that is open to all; regardless of ability, gender, cultural background or ethnicity.
How is this vision for Music to be achieved?
Implementation
Children who take part in music lessons at the school will:
- Progressively develop the key music skills of: listening, composing and performing
- Develop specific music related language, enabling children to talk about their methods and explain their process when composing and performing.
- Develop the confidence to apply what they have learned to a variety of situations and to realise the cross-curricular links that are possible within the subject of music.
- Understand how music can have a profound impact on society in general.
- Learn about the lives, working methods and achievements of musicians from around the world.
- Share and celebrate achievements in the world of music, both in school and the wider community.
- Take part in music related extra-curricular activities such as music festivals, performances and workshops.
How does the school know if the Music curriculum has been effective?
Impact
Children who have developed their knowledge and skills in music progressing through our curriculum, will be fully prepared when leaving us to attend secondary school. Furthermore, the emphasis of building self-confidence and self-esteem will have prepared children to thoughtfully evaluate what they see and hear in society. By listening to and engaging with the musical accomplishments of people from the same and different backgrounds to themselves, children will have consolidated their respect for and understanding of others. Our Music curriculum will also have encouraged children to think creatively about how they, as active citizens of the future, can contribute to developing a rich and varied environment accessible to all through the use of music and performance. At The Phoenix Primary School and Nursery, it is hoped that a significant number of our children will have been inspired to follow careers in music, once they reach adulthood, through our solid foundations of an exciting and engaging music curriculum.
Assessment
Assessment at the Phoenix Primary School and Nursery involves topic-based outcomes, tailored to each year group. Children are assessed termly by class teachers based on ongoing assessment carried out throughout the termly topic lessons. Our assessment criteria links closely with our Music scheme.
